Detrital zircon geothermochronology reveals pre-Alleghanian exhumation of regional Mississippian sediment sources in the southern Appalachian Valley and Ridge Province

Abstract The Black Warrior foreland basin records sedimentation associated with the development of intersecting Ouachita and Alleghanian thrust belts along southern margin Laurentia. Mississippian–Pennsylvanian units in are interpreted to be sourced from either northern Appalachians mid-continent or more regionally nearby belt. We present detrital zircon U-Pb ages Th/U values Paleozoic that indicate Mississippian Hartselle Sandstone temporally chemically compatible being Appalachians. Zircon mixing models suggest sediment was primarily recycled Cambrian, Ordovician, Devonian strata Appalachian Valley Ridge, minor influx Piedmont units. A ca. 415 Ma population requires additional input Maya Block Yucatan Peninsula similar outboard terranes. (U-Th)/He analysis thermal history modeling units, which detail pre-Alleghanian exhumation Ridge. Both Cambrian Chilhowee Group Pennsylvanian Pottsville Formation exhibit dates ranging 507 263 a subset (353–329 Ma, n = 4), indicates rapid cooling inferred during Late Devonian–Early Neoacadian tectonism. propose drainage system transported material structural fabrics juncture between followed by sediment-routing rotation toward foreland. This interpretation honors chemical-age data, accounts for metamorphic grains thin section petrography, matches lithostratigraphic relationships.
